OUR CHILDREN

Our children at Springs of Hope Kenya are all considered vulnerable by UNICEF and the World Bank.  They are total orphans, meaning neither of their parents are alive or traceable. A few have living relatives that cannot take care of them due to their circumstances such as abject poverty, physical, or mental illness leading to an unhealthy home environment.  Many have experienced physical or sexual abuse, and some of our children are living with HIV.

The World Bank describes the dangers of child vulnerability in the following statement.  “Child vulnerability is a downward spiral where each shock leads to a new level of vulnerability, and each new level opens up for a host of new risks. In other words, the probability of a child experiencing a negative outcome rises with each shock.”

Our children at Springs of Hope Kenya are vulnerable children who have suffered from extremely shocking experiences in life. Without intervention from Springs of Hope Kenya their lives would look much different.  If not for SOHK, many of our children would have forgone school, possibly working menial jobs or being the head of the household as a child.  SOHK provides them with the opportunity to educate themselves for the betterment of their lives and increased opportunities in adulthood.  Without SOHK many of our children’s lives would be at risk due to the effects of illness, poverty, and abuse.  We have had numerous children come to us malnourished and sick with no one to care for them.   All of them are at risk of succumbing to childhood homelessness, prostitution, drug abuse, poverty, and in many cases death making them “Vulnerable Children.”

Springs of Hope Kenya has stepped up to be the safety net these children need, a safe and caring home for them.  Children come to us having never gone to school and not knowing how to read and write before being provided an education by SOHK.  Through counseling, mentoring, patience, and love we begin the healing process for the hurt and loss that they have experienced in their young lives.

We know that there is no way to replicate a home with a loving family and our wish is that all of our children were in families of their own.  So when possible and safe, we reunite our children with their extended family members and some of our children have found loving families through local adoption.

Springs of Hope could not do this without you! We hope you will help us be a blessing to these children by helping us to provide them with hope and a chance at a promising future, as all children deserve. God is waiting for us to do His work and we are the body of Christ that carry these burdens. God is waiting for us to notice these children who are suffering physically, mentally, and spiritually.  If they are God’s children, so then they are “our” children.
